Reader's Workshop
|
|
These two videos show a Reader's Workshop on the topic: Making Deep Connections.
Students had previously worked on making different types of connections such as Text to Text, Text to Self, and Text to World. This lesson challenged them to dive even deeper into their books by making stronger connections.
Mini-lesson:
Connection: Review of 3 types of connections with quick chant and reminder that "Reading is Thinking".
Teaching Point: Good readers make deep connections as they read to help them understand and enjoy texts.
Teach: Use of read aloud texts to model the difference between deep and surface connections.
Active Engagement: Turn and Talk with neighbor about the differences between surface and deep connections.
Link: As you read today and any day work to make deep connections.
Writer's Workshop
|
|
These videos show a Writer's Workshop lesson on alliteration that was part of an Author Study of Dr. Seuss. The students has already learned and incorporated a number of Seussical tools into their writing. During independent work time, they created a poem about themselves using alliteration.
Mini-lesson:
Connection: Review of Seussical writing tool that we learned the previous week.
Teaching Point: Alliteration is when 2 or more words that are close together have the same initial sounds. For instance "Ms. B breaks boomerangs with bats on the beautiful beach."
Teach: Use of songs and mentor texts to explore the use of alliteration and why authors such as Dr. Seuss use it.
Active Engagement: Students attempt to make some alliterations about pictures on the board.
Link: As part of the author study folder, students will create a poem about themselves using alliteration.
Quick activity before independent work: In small groups, students brainstorm words that start with the same sounds as their names. The worksheet they fill in will help them during independent work time.
